Abstract

In their recent paper, Horwarth-Winter and associates reported three instances of granulomatous formation resulting from FCI punctal plugs (FCI Ophthalmics, Issy-les-Moulineaux Cedex, France) causing two intrusions and one extrusion of the plugs three, 37, and 12 months after plug placement, respectively.1 The nature of this tissue reaction is rather vague because the authors do not offer any data regarding histopathologic examination. Furthermore, terms including granuloma, granulomatous proliferation, and formation of granulation tissue are used in different sections of the paper, and one finds it difficult to understand whether these terms are used interchangeably or have specific meanings.
