Abstract

Background Long-term potentiation (LTP),as a classical electrophysiological models of neural plasticity and learning and memory mechanism, has been widely studied. The molecular mechanism underlying the induction of LTP has been identified, but it remains unknown the maintenance of memory storge.Protein kinase Mξ (PKMξ) is an autonomously active, atypical protein kinase C isoform which is necessary for maintaining LTP and long-term memory. Objective To summarize the recent research progress of the mechanisms of long-term memory maintained by PKMξ.Content This review elabrated the summary of PKMξ,molecular mechanism of memory storage, memory erasure and related diseases.Trend More in-depth researches will be carried out about the effects and possible mechanisms of PKMξ in maintaining the long-term memory. Key words: Protein kinase Mξ; Long-term potentiation; Long-term memory
