Abstract

The authors have analysed the damping properties of surface plasmon-phonon-polaritons (PPP) in n-type polar semiconductor layers. An analytic expression for the damping function has been derived which depends on the frequency, the layer thickness and the concentration of the free carriers, The dispersion curves, the electromagnetic field, the energy flow, the damping function, the propagation length and the lifetime of the surface PPP are calculated and presented in graphical form. It is shown that with an increasing concentration of free carriers the damping function decreases. High concentrations and very thin layers result in a very large-propagation length (over one hundred metres) and the excitation is then called a super-long-range surface PPP.
