Abstract

This paper reports on the visualisation study of transition in the flow in a channel in a rotating frame of reference. At certain combinations of the Reynolds and the rotation numbers the Coriolis force causes an instability that leads to formation of longitudinal vortices imbedded in the flow. The visualised flow patterns are seen against a theoretical background of linear stability analysis of plane Poiseuille flow under the influence of Coriolis force. Typical results comparing theoretical and experimental outcomes are presented. Flow visualisation studies of transition were also conducted in slightly accelerated and decelerated channel flows subject to Coriolis force due to system rotation. They show the simultaneous existence of flow regions with and without longitudinal vortices.KeywordsChannel FlowSystem RotationCoriolis ForceRotation NumberLongitudinal VortexThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
