Abstract

Whole blood selenium concentrations of blood bank donors were determined in samples obtained each October during the years 1974 to 1988. Linear regression showed a slight but significant annual increase of the mean whole blood selenium concentration of 0.67 ug/l from 107 to 116 ug/l (r=0.14; p=0.03). The calculated daily mean intake of selenium increased from approx. 52 ug to 62 ug during the period. Addition of selenium to animal feedstuffs is suggested to be responsible for the increase.
