Abstract

Longitudinal plasma waves in thin metallic films on metal substrates are investigated by applying a hydrodynamic model. An explicit dispersion relation for these waves is obtained in the electrostatic limit for small wave vectors. It is shown that there exists a minimum thickness of the thin film below which no plasma modes can be excited in the thin film. As the thickness increases, the frequency of these modes decreases. In the limit of large thickness we find that no plasmons localized at the interface exist.
