Abstract

The first phase conjugation experiment in a plasma, using wavelengths in the microwave range (X band) is reported. A longitudinal resonance (plasmon or phonon) is excited by optical mixing of two pump waves in a low density discharge plasma. The resonance is detected by a three wave phase conjugation process described by the coupled mode equations accounting for pump depletion, either in transmission or in reflexion, as opposed to the usual reflection conjugation by four wave mixing. We also stress the optimal coherent scattering event achieved by the phase conjugation process.
