Abstract

An analysis is made of longitudinal dispersion of concentration differences in the airways of the lung by applying standard fluid dynamic concepts to the morphometric data of Weibel [21]. Assuming gas of uniform concentration in the “respiratory zones” of the lung “back-mixing” with that in the anatomical dead space, a relationship is derived between P CO 2 at the lips and expired volume closely resembling the CO 2 elimination curve. This is discussed in relation to allowing for dispersion when deriving the true nature of regional and stratified inhomogeneity in the terminal airways.
