Abstract

The present chapter provides an overview of longitudinal and diary methods in age and work research. Two types of research questions in this field can be addressed using longitudinal and diary methods. The first type focuses on understanding age’s main effects by investigating how the variables or phenomena of interest change over time. The second type focuses on age’s cross-level moderation effects in shaping variables’ relations at the within-person level. Following the summary of the relevant research designs, we offer a set of practical recommendations for conducting longitudinal and diary studies. Related statistical methods (i.e., latent growth modeling, growth mixture modeling, and multi-level modeling) that fulfill the purpose of longitudinal and diary research are reviewed. We discuss limitations of longitudinal and diary methods, and future directions at the end of this chapter.
