Abstract

As part of a nearly 900 ft extension of a container wharf in Bayonne, New Jersey, designers had to contend with the presence of a 100-year-old sewer outfall tunnel that crossed the extension at an angle. The solution took the form of a 190 ft long, 30 ft deep, 500-ton steel truss that spans the outfall tunnel and helps to support the waterside legs of the wharf’s large container cranes.
