Abstract

Mangalore, which is known as port city of Karnataka is on a fast track in terms of development due to establishment of new Mangalore. But because of the construction of port structures such as breakwater, many changes in the coastal processes have been taken place in the vicinity of the port. Sediment Trend Analysis (STA) is a technique by which net patterns of sediment transport can be identified from the relative spatial changes in grain size distributions of all naturally occurring sediments. Changes in the grain size parameters (mean grain size, sorting and skewness) of neighbouring sediment samples are compared to derive particular trend cases such as either total deposition or partial deposition. Long term changes in the sediment trend patterns are inferred with help of applying Sediment Trend Analysis for the samples collected during the years 1997, 1999, 2000, 2013 and 2014. Algorithms developed for preparing Sediment Trend Matrices and plotting Sediment Transport Paths (STP) are used in this analysis. The results showed the change in net sediment movement direction over a decade and the probable sources remain the same.
