Abstract

Concrete prisms made with chloride-free concrete containing air-cooled blastfurnace slag aggregates have been destructively examined after 24 years’ exposure in an industrial environment. The reinforcement was almost entirely free of corrosion at all depths of cover. The concrete had carbonated to a depth of 2–3 mm. Concrete made with such slag aggregate is considered to provide deflective long-term protection for steel reinforcement.
