Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by an inflammatory response of the lungs and a progressive irreversible limitation to airflow. This disease process affects 12 million people in the United States alone and is the third leading cause of death. The natural history of COPD likely involves a stepwise decline, with acute exacerbations leading to a more rapid decline in lung function and increased mortality.
