Abstract

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the counter-pandemic measures have led to a substantial drop in people's mobility. The interesting question is whether mobility after the pandemic will return to the pre-pandemic levels or whether the change in mobility will be more enduring. In this paper, we investigate the permanent effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on teleworking and online shopping. Using panel data collected among the Czech adult urban population in four waves during 2020 and 2021, we find that teleworking and online shopping are expected to increase relative to the pre-pandemic levels even after the pandemic. The number of trips to work and out-of-home shopping is expected to decrease. The main determinants of teleworking are job type, industry and education. The main determinants of online shopping are age and education.
