Abstract
Objective: Patch angioplasty during carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is commonly used to treat carotid artery stenosis. Various patch materials are available, including venous, Dacron, bovine pericardium, and polytetrafluoroethylene. However, the choice of which patch to use is still a matter of debate. Autologous venous material has disadvantages such as wound related problems and a prolonged intervention time. This is due to the harvesting of the vein. These limitations can be bypassed when synthetic or biological patches are used, which are immediately available. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the long term outcomes in patients who received a CEA with either a bovine pericardial patch (BPP) or a Dacron patch.
