Abstract

The influence of simulated mechanical pruning (SMP) and hand pruning (HP) was assessed on yield, soluble solids ([unknown]Brix), sugar production, dry matter production, and total leaf area development of Grenache vines (<i>Vitis vinifera</i> L.) over an 11-year period from 1986 through 1996. SMP treatment was superior to HP treatment for yield, sugar production per vine, and dry matter production. [unknown]Brix was occasionally reduced by SMP. These effects of SMP treatment could be explained by the larger total leaf area produced and the greater length of time during which the leaves were active. These results are especially important in our low-yield model of viticulture with a very limited total leaf area.
