Abstract

The Side Effects of Drugs Annuals form a series of volumes in which the adverse effects of drugs and adverse reactions to them are surveyed. The series supplements the contents of Meyler's Side Effects of Drugs: the International Encyclopedia of Adverse Drug Reactions and Interactions. This review of the 2011 publications on adverse reactions to dermatological drugs covers azelaic acid, coal tar and dithranol, cosmetics such as mascara, dermal fillers (fumaric acid esters, hyaluronic acid, poly-l-lactic acid), diphencyprone, dyestuffs (henna and paraphenylenediamine), the fragrance hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde, topical glucocorticoids, methyisothiazolinone, phototherapy and photochemotherapy, podophyllum derivatives, sunscreens, surfactants, vitamin A (retinoids; acitretin and isotretinoin), calcipotriol, and laser therapy. Special reviews cover immunological reactions to iodopropynyl butylcarbamate and the postulated association of isotretinoin with suicide, the supportive evidence for which is of poor quality and is outweighed by the evidence against.
