Abstract

This letter presents a long-range visible light communication temperature monitoring system using a CMOS image sensor of mobile device camera as a photodetector. A low complexity transmitter with a single color light-emitting diode (LED) is designed to transmit temperature data of a location, while a mobile device used as receiver. Temperature data are modulated by ON–OFF keying modulation and non-return to zero onto a color LED light beam. Various color light beams are used to differentiate data from transmitters. Data can be retrieved from a selected transmitter without interference from other transmitters by selecting the LED color of the transmitter. The experiment results shows that the data of the proposed system can be retrieved with ±4% error rate in a range up to 25 m.
