Abstract

The paper describes an analysis of long-range plutonium utilization strategy with a fuel cycle optimization model; FCOM. Major findings of the analysis are summarized as follows; 1) interim storage of spent fuels provides the most economical option for adjusting the plutonium supply/demand; 2) the level of reprocessing costs controls the optimal timing and scale of plutonium recycling in light water reactors; 3) conditions under which fast breeder reactors are chosen in the optimal strategy are numerically classified.
