Abstract

We investigate the effects of long range correlations on the longitudinal and transverse integrated electron scattering cross sections. We use a schematic model based on the random phase approximation in which the center of mass motion, as well as the giant dipole resonance, is properly described. We show that dipole correlations significantly lower the total electron scattering inelastic cross section in the region of low momentum transfer (0.5-1 ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$), in agreement with recent experimental data for $^{12}\mathrm{C}$.
