Abstract

A large tetragonal distortion, c/a from 1 to 0.88, found in Pd 3Mn upon the addition of Mn or Al is found to be quantitatively related to the size of the Fermi surface through the stabilization condition of the long period superlattice. The number of valence electrons of Mn and Pd can be deduced to be 3.0 and 0.61, respectively.
