Abstract

It is shown that in the reaction of active nitrogen with CO, there is a competition between the quenching effect on N 2(B 3II g) high υ, for very short contact-time between CO and active nitrogen (τ) and the increasing population of these states for higher τ, specially for level υ′ = 12. This enhancement may be due to a vibrational excitation of CO by N 2(X 1Σ + g) υ *, followed by the reaction: CO(X 1Σ + υ * + N 2(X 1Σ + g) υ * → N 2(B 3II g) υ′ ≈ + CO(X 1Σ +).
