Abstract

Lunchtime theatre in London was a phenomenon of the late 60’s and the turn of the decade. David Halliwell started the whole lunchtime movement in 1966 with Quipu in the wake of the development of the fringe theatre and in particular, under the influence of two ex-patriate Americans — Charles Marowitz (who brought the ‘Method’ to London in the 50’s, and along with Peter Brook promoted Artaud during the 60’s) and Jim Haynes (a self-styled anarchist and entrepreneur of the alternative society, whose Drury Lane Arts Lab launched just about every later-to-be-important fringe company).
