Abstract
This paper refutes Li Meidu's (1988) claim that verb gapping is allowed in Mandarin Chinese. Apparent examples of verb gapping in the second conjunct of coordinate structures: NP V NP, NP NP are shown to involve a topic - comment structure rather than a subject - object structure with a verb deletion in between.
