Abstract

Value stream design (VSD) is the leading method in lean manufacturing for planning production systems. Preliminary research showed that promising logistical alternatives are not adequately addressed in VSD. Therefore, a framework for planning these alternatives was developed. Possible VSD alternatives occur for shipping principles, process linkages, pacemaker positioning as well as different transport and process designs. Promising design alternatives are simulated and evaluated to find the best VSD. The paper presents findings based on applications of the approach in industry. It is shown when and how logistic decisions can affect key performance indicators such as costs, throughput times, degree of flow and flexibility parameters in practical application.
