Abstract

This study aims to determine and obtain factual data about the ability of self-control or locus of control (LOC) in overcoming depression in late adolescents. The research was conducted by survey method on new students of Study Program S1 English Education University Mathla'ul Anwar Banten first semester academic year 2015-2016 aged 18 s.d. 21 years. The results show that new students have an internal LOC of more than 60% and external LOC is more than 30%. Students with an external LOC are more likely to experience depression than those with internal self-control (LOC). From the results of the study also found that new students who experience depression at most are at a mild depression level, while those who are depressed moderately less than 5 percent. The study found that no students were severely depressed. The proportion of women greater depression than men, ie 9 women and 4 men or 69.23% versus 30.77%. The acquisition of depression levels in new students is also influenced by the domicile in which they live. Based on the data, most participants still live with their parents, only 18% chose kost near the campus. The results also confirm the positive association of reading in the acquisition of self-control level (LOC) which proves that more than 78 percent have internal self-control, and only 22 percent less have external self-control. Depression can be prevented and avoided by strengthening mentally and spiritually, such as getting closer to God, providing daily time to build relationships with parents, relatives and friends, developing new interests and new activities, engaging in daily activities Which brings personal satisfaction, recognizing the fear of rejection and guilt. This research is recommended to lecturers academic supervisor to be aware of the depression in the students guidance, Higher Education as a reference for preparing the introduction program for new students and further researchers who want to study about depression in adolescents.
