Abstract

Abstract The Thünen model of agricultural land use is employed as a basis for developing the spatial implications of models of farm tenure choice. Major predictions are that cash rental should increase relative to both owner operation and sharecropping closer to markets. Data for United States counties from 1880 are used to test the predictions. The predicted spatial patterns are found and appear to derive from the hypothesized behavior.
