Abstract
This chapter reviews spatially localized modes emerging in nonlinear discrete dynamical systems, which are called intrinsic localized modes. After the notion of intrinsic localized mode is introduced by using a simple mathematical model, the essential mechanism for the existence of intrinsic localized modes and their basic properties are described in both cases of standing wave and traveling wave modes. The intrinsic localized modes in real systems have also been studied so far. We review some numerical simulation studies and experimental observations of the intrinsic localized modes in real systems.
