Abstract

The correlation between lithium content and lattice parameter in LixCoO2 is commonly measured by x-ray diffraction resulting in reliable information averaged over a large specimen volume. In the present work Convergent Beam Electron Diffraction in a transmission electron microscope is used to obtain diffraction information from small specimen volumes within single LixCoO2 particles. Our results indicate that LixCoO2 particles subjected to the same oxidizing treatment show a distribution of lattice parameters that includes differences between single particles and within different regions of the same LixCoO2 particle. Systematic CBED measurements on delithiated particles have the potential to provide valuable information for the simulation of the electrochemical behavior of LiCoO2 cathodes.
