Abstract

Traumatic rupture of the descending thoracic aorta after blunt chest trauma is a well-described lesion. Blunt trauma produces laceration of the intima, the media and often the adventitia. Small and extensive aortic dissections have been described in patients with traumatic aortic rupture [1,2] whereas the presence of dissection without aortic rupture after blunt trauma is exceedingly rare [3,4]. We describe a case of a localized aortic dissection of the descending thoracic aorta in a patient after a deceleration trauma.
