Abstract

The tracer protein horseradish peroxidase was used in localizing the efferent neurons of the tensor tympani muscle of the newborn kitten. They were found to be within the parvocellular division of the trigeminal motor nucleus. This nucleus was redefined according to cell size. Cell counts showed an average neuron population of 534. Fiber counts on the kitten tensor tympani nerves revealed an average of 2470 fibers consisting of an average of 176 myelinated and 2299 unmyelinated fibers. The fiber counts on the adults revealed an average of 924 myelinated and 473 unmyelinated fibers and a total average of 1396. Caliber determinations showed fibers up to approximately 9.6 μm with the majority falling in a range of 2.4 to 3.6 μm.
