Abstract

No difference between allergic and non-allergic individuals was observed with regard to the presence of immunoglobulins in the nasal mucosa. It appeared that the ‘normal’ population of plasma cells found adjacent to the secretory epithelium mainly consistes of γ-producing plasma cells. Increasing numbers of γG-containing cells occured in association with inflammatory reactions in the superficial mucosa. Local synthesis of immunoglobulins in patients with hypo-γ-globulinemia was either lacking or largely reduced.
