Abstract

Early growth response factor-1 (EGR-1), a proto-oncogene, is also known as Krox 24, NGFI-A, Zif268, Tis8 and ZENK. EGR-1 is used as a marker of enhanced neuronal activity, particularly in nociceptive neurons in the dorsal horn. EGR-1 has been shown to be expressed in DRG culture in response to NGF treatment; however, the expression EGR-1 in rat DRG cells and the relationship of EGR-1 cells to chemically defined nociceptors (TRPV1 and IB4) is unknown. The present study quantitated EGR-1 expressing cells in adult rat DRG and determined the population of ERG-1 cells co-expressing TRPV1 or IB4.
