Abstract
We construct the quantized Liouville field using canonical quantization in the reduced WZNW formulation of Liouville theory. We find that for c < 1 the solution naturally reproduces the Hilbert space of minimal conformal models, whereas for c > 25 locality excludes the existence of the Liouville field in a Hilbert space that contains discrete Virasoro representations.
