Abstract
A Green's function formalism is used to calculate the localised states associated with a magnetic impurity in a ferromagnet described by the transverse Ising model. We consider both the cases of an infinite medium with an impurity and a semi-infinite medium with an impurity in the Nth layer ( N=1, 2…) from the free surface. The non-resonant excitations of the system due to the impurity (i.e., the `defect modes' outside the region of the bulk and surface spin waves) are calculated numerically for the high-temperature phase. Three situations are analysed, depending on the position of the impurity site: the impurity is in the surface ( N=1), the impurity is just below the surface ( N=2) and the impurity is in the bulk region ( N⩾3).
