Abstract

A set of control points observed as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project is used to derive an empirical model of the geoid from the GPS and levelling observations made to each point. This is used to test the accuracy of the global geoid model EGM96 and the Ordnance Survey model OSGM91. Both are shown to achieve the accuracies claimed by their developers. Further, the relative accuracy of the OSGM91 model is tested, in order to determine the effect of using it in conjunction with differential GPS observations. The relative accuracy is shown to be a significant improvement on the absolute accuracy for distances up to 1Okm.
