Abstract

On the archaeological level, the relationship between the Oceanian man and his surroundings is a new subject matter in New Caledonia. A study of the environment of different Lapita sites on the West coast of New Caledonia gives us information on the economic activities and the way of life of these Oceanians. All these sites are on coastal spots having very particular characteristics. These ancient peoples could also have been in contact with other groups from neighbouring archipelagos, from ancient times up to now. Finally, excavations of Koumac (N KM 001) and Nessadiou (W BR 001) sites made it possible to bring to light the first elements of knowledge on the potters' organization of space in the Lapita cultural complex.
