Abstract

The article by Stella Pelše Local/global Latvian art at the Venice Biennale is an overview of Latvian artists’ participation in Venice Biennales since 1999, when the first independent Latvian exhibition in Venice was presented. Although the account is restricted to a small and local topic, it presents an important and broadly contextualized phenomenon – young states’ search for artistic independence and an idiom specific, yet universal enough for the international art scene. The author reconstructs the aesthetics of Latvian art as combining nature with reductive minimalistic forms, in search of a universal and existential model.
