Abstract

Using UHV scanning tunneling microscopy, the local surface deformations produced by strain fields of misfit dislocations are studied for molecular beam epitaxy of 2.1% lattice-mismatched EuTe on PbTe(111). The observed surface deformations exhibit a characteristic dependence on the orientation of the Burgers vector, which is in excellent quantitative agreement with calculations based on elasticity theory, taking into account the relaxation of the local strain fields due to the existence of a free surface. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that this allows the study of misfit dislocation reactions by STM even for dislocations located far below the epitaxial surface.
