Abstract

A survey of local reactions following tail-tip vaccination with strain T1/44 dried lyophilised Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia vaccine, prepared at Dakar, is described. After first vaccination in an actuely infected area, there was an over-all tail-tip loss in adult stock of17 per cent. A further loss of0.3 per cent occurred after a second vaccination carried out between six and eight months after the first. A third vaccination after a similar interval resulted in no further tail-tip losses. Lesions at the site of injection, uni- and bi-lateral swellings in the ischiatic region and gross perineal oedema were also seen. Following first vaccination, the incidence of local reactions was much greater in herds in the infected area than in herds in a neighbouring uninfected area. Tylosin proved very effective in the treatment of severe local reactions.
