Abstract

An experimental method is described, which facilitates the determination of local population densities of the n = 2 state of hydrogen in an inhomogeneous plasma that is not in thermodynamic equilibrium. Moreover a measurement of effective electronic collision rates that give rise to a depopulation of the state n = 3 was possible.
