Abstract

We now turn to the local moment theories which form another mainstream of the theoretical developments in magnetism. We start with a very brief summary of the picture of magnetic insulators, for which the local moment theory is well established, and touch upon the metal-insulator (Mott) transition and the s-d or s-f model for the rare-earth metals and dilute alloys. Then follows a summary of the Friedel-Anderson theory of local moment formation in metals, subsequent theories of the interaction between a pair of local moments and various early attempts toward a local moment theory of magnetic transition metals and alloys.
