Abstract

Since the Medina of Tunis is both a part of the historical and cultural heritage requiring to be safeguarded and an urban area requiring renewal, it stands in need of an integrated development policy, one that strikes a balance between protecting that heritage and meeting social needs. This article describes the partnerships that have been set up in connection with the projects for the rehabilitation of the Medina, with particular emphasis on institutional and financial arrangements and the major role played by the Association de sauvegarde de la Médina (ASM — Association for safeguardingthe Medina).
