Abstract

By considering the immunoreaction of cancer from the aspect of changes occurring in cells in the region of cancer tissues, immunotherapy for cancer utilizing this reaction was reviewed. Many researchers have described that the prognosis of cases showing marked lymphocyte infiltration at the location of solid cancer tissues in various organs generally favorable. These infiltrating lymphocytes include OKT4+ cells, OKT8+ cells and Leu7+ cells (NK cells), which can be increased by administration of immunological activators such as BCG, BCG-CWS, N-CWS, OK-432 and PSK into the tumor and these agents also enhance the reaction in regional lymph nodes. Moreover, it has been reported that intratumoral administration of these agents increase survival rate. To date, attempts to readminister infiltrative lymphocytes previously collected and activated with IL-2, etc., to organisms with cancer. Also, the promising future of local cancer immunotherapy achieved by enhancing local immunoreaction to the cancer was reviewed with reference to the foreign and domestic literature.
