Abstract
On the face of it, we know more about the engineering profession than practically any other large topic in the history of American technology. There are eight historical monographs explicitly concerned with the subject, half a dozen relevant biographies, and at least as many books that deal with the profession indirectly.' So it might seem fanciful to argue that we lack important details or that major questions remain to be addressed.
