Abstract

This study compared the local evaluation practices in vocational education between community colleges and secondary schools. The sample for this survey consisted of the 39 community college districts and the 120 largest secondary schools, including all 32 area vocational centers, in Illinois. Usable responses were received from 74% of the community colleges and 51 % of the secondary schools. Findings of the study indicated some differences between community colleges and secondary schools regarding vocational education evaluation efforts. Community colleges to a lesser extent than secondary schools identified program improvement motives as reasons for conducting evaluation. A smaller percentage of community colleges than secondary schools also reported using evaluation results for making changes in curricula. Proportionately more community colleges tended to involve advisory committee members in evaluation efforts, and they reported a wider distribution of evaluation findings than did secondary schools.
