Abstract

The endogenous glucocorticoids (GCs), cortisol, are released from adrenal gland in response to various stressors. Extraadrenal cortisol production in various tissues is recently reported. Skin is also known to synthesize cortisol through de novo pathway and through activating enzyme. 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (11β-HSD1) is the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of hormonally inactive cortisone into active cortisol in cells. We recently reported that 11β-HSD1 is also expressed in keratinocytes and negatively regulates the proliferation of keratinocytes.
