Abstract

The local compressibilities around the trivalent substitutional impurities Cr 3+ and Fe 3+ in MgO crystals have been studied by analyzing the pressure dependence of optical and EPR spectra for MgO:Cr 3+ and MgO:Fe 3+. It is found that the local compressibilities of CrO 6 9− and FeO 6 9− octahedral clusters in MgO are smaller than the compressibility in pure (or host) MgO crystal, but they show good agreement with the corresponding compressibility in pure Cr 2O 3 and Fe 2O 3 crystals where Cr 3+ and Fe 3+ are the trivalent host ions.
