Abstract

BACKGROUND: Non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) can be symptomatically similar to allergic rhinitis (AR) except that patients do not exhibit allergen sensitivity with skin prick testing (SPT). Recent studies investigated the presence of epsilon germline transcripts in the lungs and nasal cavities in patients with active allergic disorders. This marker is a reflection of active isotype class switching to IgE and, therefore, is categorically diagnostic of an ongoing allergic disorder. Given that IgE can be produced locally and lead to symptoms of NAR, we sought to determine whether the presence of epsilon germline transcription indicates local production of IgE in NAR.
