Abstract
In China’s Warring States period, the king of Chu aimed to conquer the kingdom of Song. He made extensive preparations, building massive siege towers and amassing soldiers. These war efforts attracted the attention of a master strategist Mozi, founder of the Mohist school of philosophy. Mozi hoped to persuade the Chu sovereign to spare such bloodshed. The program holds auditions indiscriminately for potential participants. Only selected candidates can join the official matches to form teams and compete for the best debater. Their performances are judged by live audiences and commented on by professional judges. Argumentation scholars have studied public deliberation from the perspective of argument spheres in Western contexts, led by Goodnight’s analysis of the personal, technical, and public spheres in America. The relations between the three spheres varies in different cases. In some, expanding the technical sphere can support public deliberation; in others, personal spheres invade technical and public spheres.
